BREAKING: Cubs Make a Series of Roster Moves on Labor Day
The Cubs made a series of moves ahead of their season finale with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Just a couple of hours before the Cubs and Cardinals square off for the last time in the 2020 regular season, the Cubs make a plethora of moves before the 3:10 p.m. CDT first pitch.
The Cubs added Ildemaro Vargas to the active roster. He will likely be available today as the Cubs take on the Cardinals. However, the rest of the moves are worth breaking down.
First, the Cubs claimed speed demon OF Billy Hamilton from the New York Mets. Hamilton can add some more outfield depth now that Steven Souza Jr. was DFA’d. Hamilton will strictly be a depth piece and can provide a spark on the base paths during the correct circumstances.
The Cubs also made some moves with their arsenal of arms. LHP Matt Dermody was DFA’d after his Cubs debut on Sunday. Pedro Strop has returned to the team and is now officially joining the South Bend alternate site. Aside from that, RHP Duncan Robinson was added to the 60-man pool. All good things for the Cubs considering they desperately need to find some relievers who can get outs.
To round out the moves, C Jose Lobaton was released. Lobaton was additional catching depth at the South Bend site for the Cubs, who also recently DFA’d C Josh Phegley as well.
As the season enters the home stretch, every roster move will matter that much more. Ideally, the Cubs can add a few arms to the bullpen to help in their pursuit of the playoffs, via roster moves just like these. The Cubs will need all the help they can get after dropping the last three to the Cardinals following Darvish’s gem on Friday night.
