Scottie Pippen ‘Not Impressed’ With the Bulls’ Billy Donovan Hire

Chicago hoops legend and Pro Basketball Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen spoke on new Bulls’ head coach Billy Donovan on Tuesday.

Scottie Pippen has never been afraid to speak his mind. The man affectionately known as ‘Pip’ recently joined Forbes to discuss a flurry of topics, such as mental health, the NBA bubble, and the Lakers. During this discussion with Chris Carson, Pippen caught many off-guard with his comments regarding new Chicago Bulls’ head coach Billy Donovan.

When asked about the hire and the organization, Pippen had this to say:

“If you’re looking at it from a fan perspective, I’m not impressed with what they did. I don’t think that they have made any dramatic changes that are going to change who they are as a team. That’s just my personal opinion. I like Billy Donovan as a person but I don’t think he’s proved anything in the NBA that proves he’s worth investing in and bringing a team up that needs help like Chicago does. They’re a team that has been struggling for a long time. To me, I don’t see the value he brings to them. He’s going to be a coach but there are a lot of them out there. He didn’t do anything special in OKC that warranted him a second opportunity. That’s just my opinion.”

While many online and in the media have been quick to discredit the statement, it’s hard to ignore Pippen’s resume. The six-time NBA Champion played under one of the greatest basketball coaches of all-time in Phil Jackson. However, this isn’t the first time Scottie has elaborated on tension with the organization. To say the relationship has been rocky would be an understatement.

Since leaving Florida for the NBA, Billy Donovan has compiled a record of 247-157 in five seasons with Oklahoma City. Donovan also reached the postseason in each of those seasons, compiling a playoff record of 18-23.
