After the out-of-the-box hiring of Tony La Russa to fill the manager vacancy on Thursday afternoon, the White Sox have now announced five roster moves.
In doing so, they exercised their $3.5 million on Leury García for the 2021 season. They also reinstated Michael Kopech from the restricted list and Jimmy Lambert from the 60-day injured list.
Additionally, the White Sox declined options on both Edwin Encarnación and Gio González, which opens the designated hitter position for either top prospect Andrew Vaughn or a free agent. The club already indicated that they will explore the starting pitching market, so moving on from González’s $7 million 2021 payment made sense.
In conjunction with those roster moves, the Baltimore Orioles claimed utility man Yolmer Sánchez off waivers. The White Sox signed Sánchez to a minor-league deal in August of this past season.
The 40-man roster now sits at 36, so the White Sox will more than likely be filling their needs via free agency or trades. White Sox fans should be on the lookout for which players will be sporting their pinstripes in 2021.
