On This Day in AEW History: Cody Makes a Statement
One year ago today, Cody made a shocking statement that would change his career in AEW. Today, we look back on its significance.
One year ago today, Cody made a shocking statement that would change his career in AEW. It was a very simple yet powerful announcement: if he didn’t win against Chris Jericho, he would never challenge for the AEW World Championship again.
This promo still stands as the best in the company by anyone. It all starts with the breakdown of the Inner Circle vs. The Elite, where Cody secretly hinted at a major match we could see down the road between those two groups. That match was set up for earlier this year in March, but sadly that was right when live events with in-person attendance stopped. Hopefully, we still get to see it sometime in the future.
Cody followed that up by mentioning a few major names that traveled a similar path that he is on. That path is one of not only being a wrestler on the show but also maintaining a management position. After mentioning those names, he said that those men all dealt with controversy because of their dual statuses. This is where the promo started to pick up and the passion for his work came out.
Cody went on to add that he has been hearing the same controversy attached to his name and followed it up with those infamous words, “If I don’t beat Chris Jericho at Full Gear, I will never challenge for the AEW World Championship again.”
So many people look back at that now and wonder if there will ever be a loophole for him to be able to fight for the title again. But he is the current TNT Champion and the fact that he put so much work into making that title means something significant in the industry as well.
After all of that, the promo was not done. It is only the point where the promo became legendary. Cody continued by making fun of Jericho for his “best-selling book”. This was the one time that someone counted Jericho for comment and buried it. Jericho had mentioned that Cody was raised with a silver spoon, but Cody was able to turn that around and say that Jericho was raised the same way because of his father being a famous hockey player.
To close out this amazing moment, Cody elaborated on how this was about the ones that are still living, such as his mother, sister, and wife. There are so many quotes that will live on for so many years in this promo, but the biggest one came when he belted out, “It’s about the 14 years it took me to go from undesirable to un-goddamn-deniable!” To this day, that proclamation still gives wrestling fans goosebumps. No one can deny Cody’s love and passion for this industry.
Fast forward to Full Gear 2020: Cody is now the TNT Champion and he will be facing Darby Allin for the title. However, another part of The Elite put their names into a similar situation. Last week, The Young Bucks stated that if they don’t beat FTR for the AEW Tag Team Titles, they will never challenge for the titles again. This time around, I am not too sure how I feel about that.
