The Cubs’ first-year manager finished third in the NL Manager of the Year voting. The Cubs won the NL Central in Ross’s first season as manager.

In his first season as Chicago Cubs manager, David Ross finished third in the voting for 2020 NL Manager of the Year. Don Mattingly of the Marlins took home the award. Here is how the voting turned out:

In Ross’ first season at the helm for the Cubs, they won the NL Central with a 34-26 record. Some say the Cubs’ season was propelled by their hot start, where the team jumped out to a 13-3 record over their first 16 games.

After that, the team only managed a 21-23 record the remainder of the season, which ended with the Miami Marlins sweeping the Cubs in the best-of-three play-in series.

The tough ending can be attributed to the lack of offense from the Cubs. However, the season was still a successful one after the Cubs were picked to finish low in the 2020 NL Central standings.

Highlights of Ross’s first year include the division title, but Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez won their fourth and first Gold Gloves, respectively, and the Cubs won the team Gold Glove for the National League.

Ross certainly surpassed expectations in his first year as the Cubs’ skipper, and it’s safe to believe he will only improve as a manager the longer he is at the helm for the Cubs.
