White Sox Slugger José Abreu Wins 2020 AL MVP Award

Jose Abreu is the first White Sox player to win AL MVP since Frank Thomas in 1994.

As the final day of 2020 MLB award announcements approached, White Sox fans waited with bated breath in hopes of another José Abreu victory. That scenario came to fruition when Abreu beat out Jose Ramirez of the Indians and DJ LeMahieu of the Yankees to take home the AL MVP Award. Here’s a complete look at how the voting played out:

The South Side faithful has known how special of a player Abreu was ever since he stepped onto the scene in 2014. During his MLB rookie season, he smacked 36 home runs and walked away with a clear-cut American League Rookie of the Year Award.

Fast forward to 2020: Abreu put together his best season since 2014. Abreu’s masterful 2020 campaign was highlighted by 2.6 fWAR, a .317/.370/.617 slash line, 19 home runs, and an MLB-leading 60 RBIs. These accolades are well-deserved for such a prominent slugger in baseball.

Abreu also won the American League Player of the Week Award for the week of August 23 when he belted seven home runs, four of which came in consecutive at-bats against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Non-Chicago fans may not know that Abreu’s most important asset to the White Sox is his leadership, particularly around young Hispanic and Cuban players like Yoan Moncada and Luis Robert. Abreu defected from Cuba in order to join the White Sox in 2014, and being the longest-tenured White Sox star has granted him that leadership role. While watching the White Sox, all baseball fans can understand why these young players look up to Abreu.

Thanks to Abreu’s combination of leadership and on-field success in 2020, White Sox fans know that ‘Pito’ earned this honor. Congratulations to José Abreu, your 2020 American League MVP!
