Matt Nagy Is Finally Giving Up Bears’ Play-Calling Duties

Matt Nagy finally steps down as the Bears offensive play-caller.

The news that Bears’ fans have been waiting extremely impatiently for has finally arrived! Matt Nagy told reporters today that he will give up play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Bill Lazor in the Bears’ upcoming Monday Night Football matchup against the Vikings.

Is This Sufficient Change?

Bears’ offensive coordinator Bill Lazor should provide more of a stable foundation for this offense to operate. He has experience calling plays in the NFL and has worked with Nick Foles in the past.

During his time with the Bengals and Dolphins, his offenses were never particularly great. If you take a look at the net yards gained per pass attempt, NY/A, it doesn’t paint the prettiest picture. However, it’s worth noting his four years with those two teams were spent during their respective down years.

Is This Enough to Make the Offense Better?

Immediately, my first thought is yes, it absolutely does make the Bears’ offense better. Time and time again, Matt Nagy showed how his creative edge from 2018 was shattered into a million pieces by the double doink. He had no ability to see past his own stubbornness and that hindered where this offense could go.

The real trouble lies within the offensive line. Not much has changed over the last few weeks since general manager Ryan Pace hasn’t brought in any linemen worth writing home about.

Consensus

My fear is that nothing much will change in this game against the Vikings. The Bears still have a stationary quarterback behind a leaky offensive line. The Vikings are clawing their way out of the NFC North pit of misery and the way they’ll continue to do that is by coming after Foles aggressively.

Bill Lazor has a difficult task ahead of him with the Bears play-calling. If he fails, I fear he’ll be used as a scapegoat for Matt Nagy to continue his campaign against providing Bears fans with a competent and modern NFL offense.
