Stout season is in full swing! Meaning I go ahead and spend way more money than I can afford to on almost any stout that I can get my hands on. For my first post, I want to highlight a barrel-aged stout that only gets released once a year around Thanksgiving. And no, it isn’t Bourbon County. I’m talking about Half Acre Benthic!
This big, bold stout has become one of my favorite stouts from Chicagoland. This year, Half Acre released base Benthic, along with four variants: Vanilla Benthic, XTRA DUBL Benthic, Cherry Brandy Benthic, and Old Ben Benthic. The base version is what I will be focusing on for this review.
Base Benthic is a 13.7% ABV imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels on toasted coconut and coffee beans. One sip of this beer gives you a velvety mouthfeel with a nice roastiness and a hint of sweetness. What I really enjoy about this stout is coffee and coconut complement each other nicely. The coffee gives off a very robust flavor, but it doesn’t outshine the subtle sweetness from the coconut.
Though it may be difficult to find this beer now, I highly recommend seeking it out. I was able to get a four-pack of base Benthic plus all of the variants for around $200. Yes, this is a very hefty price for beer. But, I also enjoy collecting. For those of you that just want to get a single can or a four-pack, go out and check your local Binny’s or a bottle shop near you. It’s definitely still floating around.
