Illinois Football Fires Lovie Smith

The Illini are moving on from Lovie Smith.

The University of Illinois football program announced today that they have parted ways with head coach Lovie Smith after yesterday’s 28-10 loss to Northwestern.

After Smith led the Illini to their first bowl game appearance since 2014 last season, an uninspiring 2020 campaign has resulted in a 2-5 record. Lovie closes his coaching tenure at Illinois with a 17-39 record.

Illinois still has one game remaining this season, a Week 9 matchup with Penn State on Saturday. Offensive coordinator Rod Smith will act as head coach for that contest.
