Well, the last week has been underwhelming to say the least. It is all about the long game. After some bad breaks, it is time to put some money down on Wednesday’s slate. Currently, after a Richmond live cover this afternoon, the record sits at 31-37-1 (45.6%, -0.97U). Wednesday night has a couple of smart sides to play, so let’s get to it.
Miami (-1.5) vs. Pittsburgh
Miami comes off of a loss against Florida Gulf Coast, while Pitt had a wild comeback against Northwestern. Miami is a stronger team than NU, and for the most part, Northwestern’s Wildcats held Pitt in check. Now, Chris Lykes, Rodney Miller, and Kameron McGusty will sit due to injury, but the NCAA is expected to make all transfers eligible on Wednesday, which includes star transfer Elijah Olaniyi from Stony Brook. KenPom.com has this game at -6 for the Hurricanes. With the needed offensive addition and a great spot to bet the ‘Canes, get this line while it lasts and play it to a -3.
Pick: Miami (-1.5)
Purdue (-4.5) vs. Ohio State
Ohio State laid an egg against Cleveland State on Sunday and only won by six points. Cleveland State is awful. This is the main reason I grabbed OSU at the high number. Well, this is a spot bet after a horribly played game. Now, the Buckeyes have the 11th most efficient offense in the NCAA, according to KenPom.com. They shoot threes at a 34.9% clip and have four guys carrying the brunt of the scoring. Purdue has five players over 10 PPG on the season and Trevion Williams and Zach Edey should own the glass. That said, OSU averages more boards per game on the season (38.6 versus 36.8). Purdue’s bigs struggle with foul trouble. Given the quickness of OSU’s guards, I expect this to be a similar issue. Purdue also lost to the two teams they played in the top-100 in college hoops (Miami and Clemson). The Buckeyes are better than both. Take the Bucks, and keep an eye on Purdue’s foul trouble early.
Pick: Ohio State +4.5
Arizona State (-13.5) vs. UTEP
Arizona State held on to a slim lead over Grand Canyon on Sunday, which is why this is a great spot to bet them here. The Sun Devils play at one of the quickest tempos in the NCAA (13th overall) and their offense ranks in the top 20 in efficiency, according to KenPom.com. UTEP likes to milk the clock (319th in possession length), so expect Remy Martin and company to put up points early with a struggling Miners’ offense trying to overcome the lead. Now, UTEP only lost to Arizona by eight points on Saturday, but Arizona also likes to hold the ball for a bit too long (302nd in possession length). The only way Arizona State does not cover this number is if they cannot crash the glass, but UTEP has the same problem. Take the Devils. Sit back. Relax. Strap it down.
Pick: Arizona State -13.5
