Just hours after the Yu Darvish trade announcement, the Cubs have reportedly made catcher Willson Contreras available for trade.
This news is alarming to Cubs fans. The team went from NL Central champions in 2020 to potentially completely tearing down and trying to replicate the rebuild that Theo Epstein successfully executed when he took over in 2011.
The writing is on the wall with the Yu Darvish/Victor Caratini trade. The Cubs received a single MLB player in the trade as well as four prospects, all of whom project to be ready in 2023 at the earliest. If that doesn’t scream rebuild, I’m not sure what does.
Now we can tack on the Willson Contreras news. How long until Kris Bryant and Javier Baez’s names are floated around too? One has to ask after the Cubs are moving so quickly during what should be one of the quietest weeks of the year to move pieces.
The speculation then becomes, what do they get for Contreras? If the return is similar to that of the Darvish trade (high ceiling players who are multiple years away), then that should scream from the rooftops across from Wrigley Field that the Cubs are tearing it down.
