It may not be the flashiest of moves, but the Chicago Cubs are adding more depth to their bullpen.

According to Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia, the Cubs have signed southpaw reliever Adam Morgan to a team-friendly minor-league contract that includes an invite to Spring Training.

Morgan has been in the big leagues for six seasons, all with the Phillies. The left-handed hurler spent the last four seasons as a reliever, but he does have 36 career starts under his belt. Most of those appearances came during his first two seasons.

Since becoming a full-time relief pitcher, Morgan carries a 3.97 ERA, 2.84 K/BB rate, and 9.6 K/9 over 133.2 innings from 2017-2019. Left-handed opponents tout a .640 OPS while right-handed batters have a .859 OPS against Morgan over the course of his career.

Morgan’s slider seems to be his best pitch to this point in his career. In 2019, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic wrote in-depth about Morgan’s slider being his put-away pitch, mainly against left-handed batters.

Last season, Morgan finished with a 5.54 ERA in just 13 innings pitched. The Cubs lack left-handed pitching depth out of the bullpen, so the North Side faithful should expect to see Morgan crack the roster at some point in 2021, if not on opening day. Jed Hoyer and co. aren’t making many flashy additions this offseason, but a low-risk, high-reward signing like this one could potentially help bolster the relief corps.
