From January 14th to January 31st, Piece Pizza and Brewery will be donating a portion of their sales to the Chicago Independent Venue League (CIVL). This organization advocates for the long-term future of independent music venues in Chicago. 40% of Chicago’s music venues including Subterranean, Hideout Inn, Metro Chicago, and Thalia Hall comprise the organization. Chicago’s live music scene has been dormant as of late due to the ongoing pandemic.

The food item on Piece’s menu dedicated to the cause is the “Classic Rockin’ Red 5150” — a red pizza with Italian sausage, mushrooms, and onions caramelized in Brew Balance, their dry-hopped lager. The pizza costs $27 and $5 from each pizza goes toward the fund.

The acclaimed restaurant and brewery has been a favorite on Chicago’s pizza scene because they offer a thin crust, New Haven-style pizza. Piece has been co-owned and operated by Bill Jacobs since 2001.

Piece has another co-owner, Cheap Trick guitarist, Rick Nielsen. In December, Piece offered 100 free pizzas to people in the service industry who were out of work.

“Rick saw what we did for industry workers and asked: can we do this for live venues?”

– Bill Jacobs (Piece Pizza Co-Owner)

Once the idea to help the music venue industry came to Nielsen, he called upon his friend Sammy Hagar of Van Halen to help. Hagar, like Nielsen, has other business ventures, including the Cabo Wabo tequila brand, and has since teamed up with Guy Fieri of Diners Drive-Ins and Dives on a new agave project.

Jacobs wants to make this a series along with their other philanthropy pursuits with Pivot Light. This organization focuses on spreading awareness of food education for children. Jacobs calls upon famous Chicago chefs, including Stephanie Izard of Girl & the Goat, Paul Kahan of Publican, and Jason Hammel of Lula Cafe, for this collaboration.
