It’s officially the end of an era on the North Side of Chicago.
Jon Lester has joined the Washington Nationals on a one-year deal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The Cubs had previously declined his option to return to Chicago at the end of October.
It was unknown whether Lester would return for the Cubs next season or not, as we pointed out after his last start at Wrigley Field in 2020.
Lester likely won’t have to buy any beers in Chicago as his role in the 2016 World Series will be remembered for decades to come, but he did Chicago a favor on his way out.
There is no doubt Cubs fans wish him nothing but the best.
Never forget this ending.
