The Chicago Bears’ defensive coaching staff continues to change after Chuck Pagano retired earlier this month. The Bears elevated Sean Desai to the role of defensive coordinator and he has begun to fill out his staff. The most recent addition is Bill McGovern as inside linebackers coach.
McGovern will replace Mark DeLeone, who joined the Lions coaching staff this week. McGovern spent last season in the college ranks as a defensive assistant at Nebraska. McGovern is no stranger to the NFL, however. His previous stops include the Eagles and the Giants. He also spent over a decade with Desai at Boston College as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
McGovern will have the opportunity to elevate Bears’ standout linebacker, Roquan Smith. Smith was snubbed of an appearance on the All-Pro first team and a Pro Bowl appearance this past season. McGovern no stranger to developing talent, as he coached Luke Kuechly at Boston College.
McGovern joins Chris Rumph as the new defensive coaching staff members looking to bring the defense back to where Vic Fangio had it.
