Former Chicago Bears’ tight end Greg Olsen is hanging up his pads for good. The three-time Pro Bowler announced his retirement before the NFC Championship game as he plans to join Fox Sports’ NFL coverage.

“Proud of what I was able to accomplish in this league, proud of the relationships and everything that the game has given me,” Olsen said during Fox Sports’ pregame show. “But sometimes, when it’s time, it’s time, and my time in the NFL now has come to an end. I’m excited for the next chapter…I’ve got it all out of my system.”

Olsen played four seasons with the Bears, nine with Carolina, and one with Seattle. He previously contemplated retiring but stuck on with Seattle in hopes of securing the one thing missing from his resume, a Super Bowl victory.

“To the countless teammates, coaches, and staff members in Chicago, Seattle, and especially Carolina, I thank you. You molded and shaped me into the player and person I am today…I try to not look back and have regrets. I have so much I am proud of over my career. But as I look back on my career, I have two. I regret never reaching the top of the mountain. I regret walking off the field under the weight of confetti, but realizing our dream came up short.”

Olsen enjoyed one heck of a career and was a fan favorite in Chicago. During his time in Chicago, he hauled in 194 receptions for 1,981 yards and 20 touchdowns. Olsen was on pace to be one of the best tight ends in Chicago football history, but his tenure was cut short due to the Bears’ decision to hire Mike Martz. Martz’s scheme called for a blocking tight end, and Olsen was known for playing spread off the line at times.

Fans appreciated Olsen for his efforts both on and off the field. The Greg Olsen Foundation brought about Receptions for Research, an organization that helps enhance the lives of those affected by cancer and cardiovascular diseases or disorders. Both Chicago and Charlotte have benefited greatly from these charitable works throughout Olsen’s career.

While there’s a debate to be had about whether or not Olsen is deserving of a place in the Hall of Fame, he will certainly be remembered as a class act. Best of luck to Greg and the Olsen family in their new endeavors.
