It’s no secret that Chicago is a breeding ground for some of the biggest names in comedy. Immense talents from both the worlds of improv and stand up have cut their teeth on our stages. But, were you aware that most comedians get good here then move to one of the coasts?
We here at On Tap Sports Net have decided it’s time to shine a spotlight on the local talent in hopes that with the support of you, dear reader, our all-stars stay in Chicago! New York and LA can develop their own. Chicago is a Triple-A city to nobody! This week, our featured comedian is Abi Sanchez.
Comedian of the Week: Abi Sanchez
Abi is a staple of the Chicago comedy scene. You can catch Abi regularly performing at all the clubs and independent shows. Abi is the co-host of the Legal Aliens Podcast on the People of Comedy Podcast Network. Last month, Abi won the HBO Latino Comedy Contest. Sanchez was also selected for Kevin Hart’s LOL Network as part of the prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. In addition to all that, Abi wears some of the best baseball hats in the comedy game!
Getting to Know Abi Sanchez
What is your favorite moment in stand up comedy?
“Watching Dave Chappelle and his crew part the crowd, like the living legend he is, while walking through the Netflix party at the 2018 JFL Fest in Montreal. Also winning the 2020 HBO Latino Stand-Up competition.“
If you could play for any Chicago sports team, what team & position?
“I’d play second base for the Chicago Cubs. It’s what I played in Little League. Plus, growing up in the Sandberg era, and watching Baez now really makes that position seem like the most fun to play.“
Who would play your wife in a sitcom about your life?
“I’d have Rashida Jones play my wife. Attractive, funny, and multi-ethnic so the woke mob can’t complain.“
What is your favorite Chicago restaurant?
“Estrella Negra on Fullerton and Western. Not your typical tacos and burritos Mexican spot.“
If you could bring one comedian back to life to do stand up in today’s world, who would it be and why?
“I’d bring back Mitch Hedberg. His style would be the perfect break from all the PC, politically skewed, identity comedy that’s prevalent today.“
Be sure to check back every week as we continue to showcase the awesome comedy talent across Chicagoland! Last week we talked to Alex Dragicevich.
