Could the Cubs, Jake Arrieta Reunion Mean a Return to Cy Young Form?

Can Jake Arrieta return to his Cy Young form? There is reason for optimism as the hurler returns to Chicago for a second stint.

The biggest acquisition of the Cubs offseason finally became official last week.

Former Cy Young winner, Jake Arrieta, rejoined the Chicago Cubs on a one-year deal worth $6.6 million with a 2022 mutual option. This move was rumored for weeks but #49 is finally back in Cubbie blue where he belongs.

Prior to the 2018 season, the Chicago Cubs made the difficult decision to sign Yu Darvish over fan favorite Jake Arrieta. Although the move was faced with harsh criticism at the time, it was ultimately the correct move for the franchise. Arrieta mostly struggled while in Philadelphia, never truly getting back to the Cy Young form that most fans had become accustomed to.

Health was likely the top reason Arrieta did not succeed in Philadelphia. In 2018, he tore cartilage in his left knee, which continued to bother him through the 2019 season. Arrieta never won more than 10 games with the Phillies and in the shortened 2020 season he posted an ERA over five for the first time since 2013.

That being said, Jake Arrieta can return to his Cy Young form with the Chicago Cubs. His numbers have not been great, but that is because he was in a new city. Jake was not where he belongs, where he found his groove, where he became the snake, where he won a Cy Young, where he posted one of the most dominant stretches of athletic prowess in all of sports, and where he became a World Series Champion.

Jake Arrieta is back in Chicago. He is back at the Friendly Confines. Don’t believe that he can return to his Cy Young form? Take a look at some of the quotes about Arrieta since he put pen to paper with the Cubs.

The man is back where he wants to be and he’s on a mission. He is here to bring this clubhouse together. He is mentoring young pitchers. He is pumping Willson Contreras’ tires. The guys are excited to have him back. What more can you possibly ask for?

Can he get back to his Cy Young form based off his last few seasons and injury issues? I don’t really know. What I do know is those quotes are enough for any Cubs fans to think they got an absolute steal with #49 donning the Cubbie blue once again.

Thank you Jake for getting Cubs fans amped up after a very depressing offseason.
