Just when everyone thought the Cubs were done making moves, the Cubs are bringing back RHP Ryan Tepera. The two parties agreed to a major league deal on Friday.
Tepera was one of David Ross’ most trusted arms during the shortened 2020 campaign. Tepera pitched 20.2 innings over 21 games in 2020, registering 31 strikeouts, recorded three holds, and only walked 12 batters. Tepera also received a vote for MVP, because he became so good for the Cubs.
Per Gordon Wittenmyer, the deal is for $800K this season. The price is perfect for what the Cubs were looking to do monetarily this offseason.
Fans should be excited that Tepera is returning. However, there are some thoughts associated with this signing per On Tap friend Bryan Smith:
It would be a bummer if Rowan Wick is on the sideline longer than expected. However, having the MLB’s nastiest pitch per whiff % on the Cubs again is certainly worth celebration.
