The Cubs made a roster move ahead of Tuesday’s Spring Training game, designating RHP Duane Underwood Jr. for assignment. The move was made in order to create a roster spot for RHP Ryan Tepera after his one-year deal became official.

Last season, Underwood Jr. pitched 7.1 innings in just seven games during the 2020 shortened season. He pitched to a 1-0 record, a 7.36 ERA, and recorded nine strikeouts.

Underwood Jr. showed moments of brilliance last season, but the long ball really hurt him in 2020. There was hope for his upside, but after running out of minor league options, he was DFA’d.

Ryan Tepera and the Cubs agreed to a one-year deal last week, but made it official today.
