After his impressive showcase, is Yoenis Cespedes on the White Sox radar? Jon Heyman believes so.

Yoenis Cespedes presented what he has left in the tank for close to a dozen teams in a showcase last week, and the White Sox were one team in attendance. Jon Heyman alluded to a possible Cespedes, White Sox union in a tweet earlier today.

There are 15 designated hitter slots in the league, and the White Sox are in need of depth, especially if Andrew Vaughn does not break camp with the team. Even with Vaughn on the roster, Cespedes could work as a backup bat off the bench, while bringing outfield experience as well. Although he does not necessarily flash the leather in the outfield, he has been there before.

2020 was the only letdown season in his MLB career after opting out. Also, after an odd injury involving a wild boar at his ranch, he was sidelined for portions of 2018 and 2019. However, outside of 2020, his lowest wRC+ was in 2018 at 121, far above league average in the 38 games he played.

The bat seems to still be there, so if the White Sox want depth, it seems to be their’s for the taking. They have a strong connection with Cuban players and have formally signed his younger brother, Yoelkis. Who knows? He could be a pleasant surprise for White Sox nation.
