Goose Island debuted a brand new adult beverage this month with their 312 Lemonade Shandy. On their website, they claim that they were sick of that same old Shandy just as everyone else was, so they made their own. We all know which Shandy they’re referring to and it’s not a song to sing on a pirate ship.
I wish I could say I enjoyed the 312 Lemonade Shandy as much as the Leinenkugel classic Summer Shandy but it falls very short of the bar set by the aforementioned competition. This is by no means a bad summer drink, however. It’s just…. different. Here’s why.
Upon first sip, there is absolutely no denying this is a Goose Island production. This tastes straight like a 312 and that’s okay because 312 is delicious. They mixed in the lemon Italian ice flavor to add more Windy City accents to an already Chicago-style beer and boom: Lemonade Shandy was born.
This beer is perfect when it’s ice-cold and consumed quickly. When considering the 4.2% ABV, that’s quite an easy task. We haven’t experienced any hot summer days in 2021 yet, but I assume this beer will pair well with grilling burgers in Lot B waiting for the White Sox first pitch.
I give the 312 Lemonade Shandy a 7.5/10. I’m a big fan of the Summer Shandy and topping it would be difficult. Both beers scream summer at the top of their bottle caps and in reality neither beer is superior to the other. It all comes down to what you prefer as a consumer: crisp lemon-flavored Leinenkugel or crisp lemon-flavored 312. The difference really is that simple.
