According to Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic, Chicago Bulls Head Coach Billy Donovan will making a change in the starting lineup for tonight’s game against the Toronto Raptors. Chicago will bench starters Coby White, the seventh pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, and Wendell Carter Jr., the seventh pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

The Chicago Bulls have looked lost offensively since returning from the NBA All-Star break and in particular, Wendell Carter Jr. and Coby White have struggled. The Bulls, losers of two straight, have had issues getting into their offensive sets and have been eaten alive on the defensive end in the paint. In their first game back from the break, the Bulls suffered a 127-105 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Chicago Bulls gave up 78 points in the paint to a Sixers team missing Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid.

The next night they lost to the Miami Heat 101-90. The Bulls let up 46 points in the paint and in that game Wendell Carter Jr. only played 22 minutes. He went 1-5 from the field with eight boards and only two points. Coby White struggled mightily as well on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Coby scored only eight points, while dishing five assists. He shot 3-13 from the field.

Billy Donovan is sending a message by benching these two that no one is safe. Adding Tomas Satoransky and Thad Young to the mix should give the Bulls more flexibility and opportunities to get into their offensive sets. With this move, the starting lineup moving forward will be Tomas Satoransky, Zach LaVine, Patrick Williams, Thaddeus Young, and Lauri Markkanen. Sato is a traditional point guard who can get the offense into their sets and can bring the best out of each and every player on the floor.

One might argue this could hurt the development of the young core, but it may be too early to question this decision from the Bulls new regime.

One can also argue that this should have been the starting lineup to begin the season, especially when everyone saw those guys struggle in the brief pre season. And I’m even more surprised Williams is still in the lineup. But with injuries, etc, not many other options at the 3, and covid issues early kept guys out.
