It was expected all along, but now it’s official. This afternoon, White Sox manager Tony La Russa named the team’s ace, Lucas Giolito, as the Opening Day starter. The big righty will take the hill on April 1st when the White Sox visit the Los Angles Angeles at 9:05 PM CT to open the 2021 season.
That game will mark Lucas Giolito’s second consecutive Opening Day start. Last year he took the mound on July 24th, 2020, after the season started late due to COVID-19. Giolito struggled in that game against the Minnesota Twins, by allowing six hits, seven earned runs, and three walks over 3.2 innings.
Have no fear though, Giolito bounced back. The White Sox ace finished seventh in Cy Young voting after posting 97 strikeouts in 72.1 IP, highlighted by a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates in late August. The White Sox need to start the season strong considering they begin the 2021 slate with a seven-game West Coast road trip. With Lucas Gioltio getting the nod to start the season followed by Dallas Kuechel and Lance Lynn, they should be in good shape.
