Reports have surfaced suggesting Allen Robinson has changed his stance on the franchise tag.
Pro Football Talk suggested Kenny Golladay’s visit to Chicago may have made Robinson change his mind. Golladay wouldn’t necessarily command the same dollars as Robinson, so he could become a trade target. The uncertainty surrounding where he’d be traded may suggest he’d rather stick it out for a year with the Bears and test the market again next year.
Golladay is much younger than Robinson, and there’s a chance that in this market, Golladay may get less money. The Bears could free up almost $18 million by trading Robinson and using that money elsewhere.
The Bears are in shedding mode. The Bears released Kyle Fuller to clear cap space, and the contract restructures done earlier in the week make a Golladay to Chicago situation possible. However, Robinson may take his $17.9 million guaranteed and try to get more money when the salary cap rebounds next season.
The Bears have been busy to start the new league year. There could be a lot of dominos that fall in the coming days and weeks.
UPDATE – 3/18/21, 7:47 PM CDT: Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Allen Robinson has signed the franchise tag.
