White Sox left fielder Eloy Jimenez exited today’s Spring Training game vs. the Oakland Athletics in the top of the second inning after a failed attempt to rob a home run. Here’s a video of the play:

The White Sox provided a brief update on Jimenez via Twitter, only stating that he exited the game due to left shoulder discomfort and will be further evaluated tomorrow.

Jimenez has experienced several defensive blunders throughout his time with the White Sox, some of which have resulted in injuries. Today’s instance is just the latest case of Jimenez’s defense causing the White Sox coaching staff and fan base to collectively hold their breath.

With Adam Engel currently sidelined due to a strained right hamstring, the White Sox could be a bit thin in the outfield come Opening Day if Jimenez’s injury ends up being more than just discomfort. While the White Sox lineup still contains potent bats throughout, losing Jimenez for any stretch of time would still detract from the club’s power potential. It’s no secret that Jimenez’s value comes primarily from his offensive production, as evidenced by his career 23.3 offensive rating and -15.7 defensive rating on FanGraphs.

UPDATE – 3/25/21, 12:20 PM CDT: Dan Bernstein of 670 The Score reports that Eloy Jimenez’s injury is “serious”. The White Sox have not provided an official update yet.

UPDATE – 3/25/21, 1:10 PM CDT: White Sox general manager Rick Hahn confirmed that Eloy Jimenez suffered a ruptured left pectoral tendon. He will need to undergo surgery and the typical recovery period is 5-6 months.
