If you have watched any college football over the last few seasons, chances are you have been bombarded with Trevor Lawrence highlights. For a better part of the last three seasons, the former Clemson quarterback has dominated at the collegiate level despite not winning a single Heisman Trophy. The former Clemson gunslinger was able to bring home three ACC Championships, three trips to the College Football Playoff, and one National Title.
The first overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft is currently held by the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team that has two quarterbacks on their roster in Gardner Minshew and Jake Luton. Let’s break down what they would be getting Lawrence and why he’s such a game-changer.
Trevor Lawrence: Tale of the Tape
Amongst all the accolades and the statistics, the first thing that pops off the tape to me about Lawrence is his arm strength and accuracy. Lawrence has the ability to make all types of throws, he can throw on the run, and has proven time and time again an ability to make things happen with his legs when the pocket breaks down. He is exceptional when it comes to improvising and extending plays, and many times a play that looks like it’s headed for a sure disaster ends up resulting in a positive gain with Lawrence under center.
As a Notre Dame fan who has been victimized by Trevor Lawrence in the 2018 College Football Playoff and the 2020 ACC Championship Game, I can assure you this kid is the real deal. He seemingly always makes something out of nothing, and just when you think you have him figured out, he drops a 60-yard bomb over your head or scrambles for 20-plus yards. As an Irish supporter, he has caused me a lot of pain. But as a football fan, you have got to respect his game.
Why Lawrence is Destined for Stardom
Lawrence should become an instant impact player for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the emergence of RB James Robinson will give Lawrence a quality running game to rely on. Additionally, Lawrence will benefit from having D.J. Chark and Laviska Shenault Jr. at the wide receiver position. It will be interesting to see how an Urban Meyer-led offense will transfer over from college to the NFL, but I couldn’t think of a better quarterback to be under center for the Jaguars. That’s why I believe he will go first overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Any time a name is mentioned in the same breath as Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning when it comes to draft prospects, the sky truly is the limit. Let’s hope that Lawrence is able to make the same impact he did at Clemson because that will make this a slam-dunk pick.
Lawrence has an opportunity to not only be the face of the franchise, but that of the entire league if he lives up to the hype. He was a team captain at Clemson, where he also made his presence felt on campus and in the surrounding community. In addition, Lawrence was a vocal advocate for college football’s return to play in 2020 and has made his voice known on many social issues.
The kid has been a superstar since his freshman season at Clemson, so he is ready for the bright lights. Let’s just hope the Jaguars set him up for success and that he can stay healthy. Currently on BetRivers Sportsbook, Lawrence has 10,000/1 odds to be the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. I cannot see any scenario in which he doesn’t go #1 overall, even if the Jaguars are crazy enough to trade out of the pick.
