After wrapping up their final Spring Training game on Tuesday, the Chicago White Sox solidified their Opening Day roster.

While not entirely surprising, one of the most notable takeaways from the list above is the inclusion of Andrew Vaughn. The White Sox will not option him in order to stop his service time clock as they have done with top prospects in previous seasons. No doubt, the club’s positional and lineup needs due to not signing a true designated hitter and Eloy Jimenez’s injury certainly necessitated Vaughn’s arrival to the show. However, not having to watch the White Sox play service time games is a breath of fresh air for the South Side faithful.

The other attention-grabbing name on the roster is Yermin Mercedes. Long have fans clamored for Mercedes to get an extended look in the show, and now that scenario may come to fruition. The 28-year-old catcher saw just one at-bat for the White Sox last season. But now that Edwin Encarnacion is out of the picture and Vaughn will presumably spend some time in left field in Jimenez’s absence, Mercedes should get the chance to show what he can bring to the table at the highest level.

As for the names not on the roster, Danny Mendick seemed to be the only “on the fence” candidate. Recent signee Jake Lamb is in the mix for the time being, seemingly in Mendick’s place.

The club optioned Mendick to the alternate site, likely wanting to keep his infield versatility waiting in the wings should further injuries or COVID-related absences occur.

As previously reported, the White Sox also released veteran backstop Jonathan Lucroy as they move forward with Zack Collins backing up Yasmani Grandal.
