2021 is the year of the quarterback. Several teams across the league are searching for answers at the most important position in football this offseason, and the Carolina Panthers are no different. On Monday, they seemingly made their decision by acquiring Sam Darnold from the New York Jets.
This move reveals the direction both teams are heading in as the NFL Draft approaches. The Jets just opened the door at pick #2 for whichever quarterback they like. Could it be Zach Wilson? Or will they shake it up with one of the other top quarterbacks?
As of right now, the best pick for the Jets seems to be Wilson. It’s usually tough to take a rookie quarterback in fantasy football, but it can depend on the team and surrounding weapons. Well, this is one of those situations you may want to stay away from. Wilson could be an intriguing late-round pick, however, so keep a watchful eye on him.
Moving on to the Panthers, they are a team with a solid offensive base. Can Darnold the ally turn himself around and help this franchise compete? He will have plenty of weapons alongside him in Christian McCaffery, Robby Anderson, and D.J. Moore. Even with those pieces in place, the Panthers will look to grab a few more offensive threats in the draft. Perhaps a guy like Kyle Pitts falls to Carolina now. They could even go with another top-tier wide receiver early on as well. Such an addition would only further help Darnold’s fantasy football stock.
Lastly, this trade could impact a third team. However, we don’t know which team that is just yet.
What we do know is whichever team decides to acquire Teddy Bridgewater will be adding a solid game manager to their offense. We will have to keep an eye on this situation to see where he lands and what his role will be — as a starter or a backup.
