White Sox slugger and 2020 American League MVP Jose Abreu surpassed a milestone tonight as he hit the 200th home run of his career. Abreu becomes the 356th player in MLB history to eclipse the milestone and just the fourth White Sox player to ever do it.

That list includes what is essentially the Mount Rushmore of White Sox hitters:

  • Frank Thomas (448)
  • Paul Konerko (432)
  • Harold Baines (221)
  • Carlton Fisk (214)

The milestone home run came in grand fashion during the eighth inning of the White Sox’s second game at Seattle.

Signed as an international free agent out of Cuba in 2013 at the age of 27, Jose Abreu has been the face of the White Sox rebuild for more than seven years.

While players and managers have come and gone over that time, Abreu has remained a constant presence on the South Side. He reinforced his dedication to the team that brought him to the Big Leagues by signing a three-year, $50M extension in 2019.

Abreu should already be considered one of the greatest to ever play on the South Side of Chicago. In his seven seasons with the White Sox, he has averaged 33 home runs and 113 RBIs per season. Abreu has taken home the 2014 American League Rookie of the Year award in addition to three Silver Slugger awards while appearing in three All-Star games along the way.

In his crowning achievement, Abreu became just the fourth White Sox player ever to win Major League Baseball’s Most Valuable Player award in 2020.

This new milestone is simply another notch in Jose Abreu’s belt. He is now 14 home runs behind White Sox great Carlton Fisk and 21 behind Harold Baines on his quest to become third all-time in White Sox home runs.
