“America’s Team” is officially on the clock! They need to focus on defense throughout this draft and they are in a great spot to do so with this pick. This draft is shaping up to be heavy on the offensive side of the ball for the first nine picks. This leaves the door open for Jerry Jones and company to pick up an elite talent on defense. With this pick, they will select Alabama Crimson Tide cornerback Patrick Surtain II.
The first thing that jumps off the screen about Surtain is dependability. He played 38 consecutive games at Alabama. That is a stat that teams will love. Add that to the fact he has all the physical traits and plays the way you’d expect a big corner to play, and he’s a perfect draft prospect. His size and length will create issues for any wide receiver or tight end. When looking for a lockdown cornerback, all of the measurables and stats show well for Surtain.
Another attribute he has that is lost at times is his tackling. He is a willing tackler and will form tackle better than most corners. An issue around the NFL at times is tackling with just the shoulder. There should be no worries about that with Surtain. His hip positioning and footwork are impeccable. He is the definition of a football player and will continue the work off the field as well.
One of Surtain’s biggest issues that could negatively effect him in the NFL is his lack of long-term speed. He can’t keep up with the speed receivers. But, whoever drafts him needs to ensure they match him up against the right receivers. His other downside is penalties, mostly because he is a physical, handsy corner. If he is given backside safety help at the next level, that will slow down. Put him in the right spots and he will continue to lock players down.
The Cowboys need defensive help all over. Bringing in another young corner and pairing him with another former Alabama player in Trevon Diggs will be massive for Dallas. This is a pairing you can build around for years to come. He has all the ability to be just like his father, a Pro Bowl player for a long time. Overall, he is one of the best prospects in the draft with little downside. This is on you now, Dallas!
