The Chicago Blackhawks are not done after making two trades in the last two weeks. On the morning of the NHL Trade Deadline, the Blackhawks acquired forward Adam Gaudette from the Vancouver Canucks for forward Matthew Highmore.

Highmore was signed by the Chicago Blackhawks as an undrafted free agent in 2017 after the conclusion of his junior hockey career. Highmore spent parts of last four seasons with the Blackhawks, playing 73 games since 2017-18. Unfortunately, Highmore never became a staple in the Blackhawks lineup and was always a 13th forward on the roster. Highmore scored four goals and added six assists in his 73 career games with the Hawks.

Gaudette was a fifth round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. After an outstanding collegiate career at Northeastern University, Gaudette split time between the NHL and AHL while in the Canucks organization. The 6-foot-1 center has registered 21 goals and 31 assists in 153 career games with Vancouver.

Both players are in need of a change. Highmore showed a lot of upside when he was originally signed, but never flourished into anything more than a fourth-line player. As for Gaudette, he has a lot of talent but hasn’t lived up to the hype surrounding him after winning the Hobey Baker Award as the best collegiate player in 2018.

For the Blackhawks, Gaudette improves their center depth for the remainder of the season, and allows the front office to see if he can be a part of the future. Stan Bowman likely saw quite a bit of Gaudette in his college days, as he was teammates with former Blackhawks prospect Dylan Sikura at Northeastern.

The NHL Trade Deadline is 2:00 PM CDT today. The Blackhawks are also in action tonight in Columbus at 6:00 PM CDT. The Blackhawks could very well make another move today.
