Ryder Rolston was originally selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft. On Monday, Colorado traded Rolston’s rights to the Chicago Blackhawks in a three-player move that sent Carl Soderberg back to the Avalanche.

The 6-foot-2, 175 lb forward posted one goal and five assists during his freshman season at Notre Dame.

Rolston is yet another Notre Dame product to join the Blackhawks’ organization. He accompanies Irish teammate Landon Slaggert, whom the Blackhawks selected in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft.

Chicago general manager Stan Bowman heaped high praise upon Rolston after the trade was completed.

“Very good skater, he brings size and speed to the game…When you go to watch Notre Dame games, you’ll notice him.”

Prior to Notre Dame, Rolston played for the prestigious USNTDP (United States National Development Program) before spending last season in the USHL with the Waterloo Black Hawks, where he posted 33 points in 42 games.

A Hockey Family

Rolston is no stranger to the NHL. His father, Brian Rolston, played over 1,000 games in the NHL and won a Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 1994-95. His uncle, Ron Rolston, spent time as an NHL head coach with the Buffalo Sabres in 2013 and now coaches at Providence College.
