After remaining silent on the topic for most of the day, the Chicago White Sox announced righty flame-thrower Michael Kopech as the Game 2 starter in today’s doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox.

The 24-year-old Kopech has appeared in four games out of the bullpen for the White Sox so far in the 2021 season, where he has been very impressive. In 7.2 innings for the White Sox this season, Kopech has allowed just two hits and one run while fanning 13 batters, good for a 15.3 K/9 rate.

Acquired from the Red Sox in 2016 as part of the Chris Sale blockbuster trade, expectations for Kopech have always been high on the South Side. He got the call to the show in 2018 and made just four starts for the White Sox before requiring Tommy John surgery.

Following his recovery year in 2019, Kopech opted out of the shortened 2020 season for personal reasons.

Today is Kopech’s chance to re-establish himself as a core part of this promising White Sox team and earn back the starting job that seemed all but guaranteed to him in 2018. That sentiment holds even more weight considering the next update.

Beyond the news of Kopech’s return to the mound as a starter, the White Sox provided an injury update regarding another pitcher.

Lance Lynn will head to the ten-day injured list due to a strained right trap. The designation is retroactive to April 17th. Lynn last pitched on Thursday in a loss against Cleveland but did not appear to have any visible ailments at the time.

In a corresponding move, the club recalled Zack Burdi from the alternate training facility. Burdi has yet to appear in a game this season after sporting an 11.25 ERA over four innings in 2020.
