Ahead of tonight’s series finale against the New York Mets, the Chicago Cubs announced that Joc Pederson is heading to the ten-day injured list with left wrist tendinitis.

In a corresponding move, the club recalled infielder Nico Hoerner from the South Bend alternate training site.

Pederson has struggled so far in 2021 on a one-year “prove it” deal with the Cubs. Over 16 games, he has gone 7-51 (.137 BA) with one home run and one triple. Pederson is striking out in 32.8% of his plate appearances, and his overall slash line sits at .137/.262/.235. These early-season struggles follow dominant Spring Training in which Pederson hit eight home runs. The lefty outfielder also just turned 29 on April 21st, so the time off should do him some good overall.

While no team welcomes injuries, a move in the aftermath of Pederson’s IL designation does provide some excitement for Cubs fans as infielder Nico Hoerner will soon make his season debut for the big league club. here is no doubt that Hoerner is part of the Cubs’ future plans, but he was optioned to the alternate site before the end of Spring Training.

In his young MLB career, Hoerner carries a slash line of .247/.309/.333. Those figures may not pop off the page, but Hoerner is a former first-round pick and a top prospect who showed significant improvements during Spring Training. His performance down in Arizona is what made his option to South Bend was a shock to the entire fanbase. He slashed .364/.396/.659 with three doubles, two triples, and two home runs over 17 exhibition games. Hoerner’s slugging percentage was his most improved area, so Cubs fans should be excited to see what he can provide in the show.
