The 2021 NFL Draft is just two days away. However, the Chicago Bears were busy at work with their former first-round draft pick on Tuesday.
Per Ian Rapoport, the Bears have exercised the fifth-year contract option on Roquan Smith.
Now that Bears are exercising the fifth-year option, it allows them two years to work out a long-term deal with their star linebacker. Otherwise, Smith would have been set to become a free agent after the 2021 season. The option will have Smith playing the 2022 season at a pricetag of $9.735 million, according to Pro Football Talk.
The Bears originally selected Smith with the eighth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Since being drafted, Smith has enjoyed a fairly consistent career despite missing a handful of games in 2019.
Nevertheless, Bears fans hope Roquan Smith can make further strides and take his game to the next level in 2021. Hopefully, he will earn a long-term deal in the process.
