Ahead of tonight’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers, the Chicago White Sox recalled outfielder Luis Gonzalez from the Schaumberg alternate training site.

Gonzalez replaces pitcher Jonathan Stiever, whom the team optioned to Schaumberg following Sunday’s game vs. Texas.

Gonzalez saw limited action during the truncated 2020 season, appearing in just three games and only seeing two plate appearances. He struck out once and reached on a hit by pitch. He recorded four hits, two RBIs, and one walk over 18 Spring Training games ahead of the 2021 season.

Though Billy Hamilton returned from the injured list ahead of the weekend series vs. the Rangers, Adam Engel still remains sidelined due to a strained right hamstring suffered during Spring Training. The White Sox expected Engel back sooner, but a minor setback in his rehab will keep him out a little while longer. Gonzalez will provide further outfield depth until Engel returns to the White Sox roster.
