Yermin Mercedes’ Productive April Results in Heap of AL Rookie Recognition

Yermin Mercedes’ torrid start to the season isn’t going unnoticed.

White Sox rookie Yermin Mercedes introduced himself to Major League Baseball with a bang.

His torrid start to the 2021 season resulted in American League Player of the Week honors for April 1-4, and his continued production throughout April has his name back in headlines again.

Today, MLB named Mercedes the American League Rookie of the Month.

Additionally, Baseball America’s first watch list of 2021 Rookie of the Year candidates ranks Mercedes atop the American League. He’s in good company too, as his White Sox teammates Michael Kopech and Nick Madrigal clocked in second and third, respectively.

White Sox fans were a little surprised when Yermin Mercedes cracked the Opening Day roster out of Spring Training, but ever since his hot start to begin the season, “The Yerminator” has become one of the most intriguing players in all of baseball.

As of May 3rd, Mercedes leads the charge in the American League’s Rookie of the Year department. The 28-year-old slugger leads the league in multiple offensive categories, including batting average (.395), hits (34), and RBI (16) in addition to a tie for the top spot in home runs (five).

White Sox fans have been begging for more playing time for Mercedes, who will likely see little to no action as the team heads to Cincinnati this week.

One thing is certain, however, if any game gets out of hand, the White Sox could save their bullpen by giving the ball to Mercedes, who poured home an 87 MPH fastball in Boston.

Baseball America will continue to release these lists throughout the season to gauge where each league’s rookies stand amongst each other. For now, White Sox fans should bask in the glory that is #73 on the South Side.
