The Cubs made a flurry of moves on Tuesday morning ahead of their doubleheader with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Names such as Jake Arrieta, Nico Hoerner, and Dan Winkler are heading to the IL.
As a set of corresponding moves, the Cubs have recalled LHP Kyle Ryan, RHP Keegan Thompson, and INF Ildemaro Vargas to replace their injured three.
Losing Arrieta, Hoerner, and Winkler is heartbreaking for the Cubs. All three players were off to strong starts in 2021.
Through six starts, Jake Arrieta has a 4.31 ERA, 31.1 innings pitched, 28 strikeouts, and only 12 walks. His 3-3 record isn’t a fair indicator of how he’s pitched, as he didn’t receive offensive support in a few of his starts. Arrieta was only roughed up in his last start against the Reds on Friday.
Nico Hoerner is off to an incredible start, slashing .389/.500/.556 with 14 hits, six doubles, seven RBI’s, eight walks, and three stolen bases. His insane 1.056 OPS only trails Kris Bryant for the team lead. He may have only played 11 games, but he has made a major impact on the Cubs roster.
Believe it or not, Dan Winkler is off to a magical start in 2021. In 10.2 innings across 13 games, Winkler sports a 0.84 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, 12 strikeouts, and only seven walks. He also is 1-0 and has two holds so far. Although he isn’t the flashy name from the Cubs’ bullpen, Winkler has been quietly good for the Cubs thus far.
The Cubs begin their series on Tuesday after Monday’s game was postponed due to rain. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:20 PM CDT, with the second game beginning at 6:40 PM CDT.
