Ahead of the Cubs’ series opener with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Chicago Cubs have placed outfielder Ian Happ on the 10-day IL.

Per the official Cubs release, Happ is out with a left rib contusion. The contusion is likely a result of his collision with Nico Hoerner in the Cubs’ series finale with the Reds last Sunday.

In addition to sending Happ to the IL, the Cubs designated LHP Kyle Ryan for assignment, and recalled outfielder Nick Martini and RHP Jason Adam from Triple-A Iowa.

Martini hasn’t played in the majors since 2019, playing 32 games with the Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres. The Crystal Lake, IL native has played 87 career games, slashing .269/.372/.380 with two home runs and 26 RBI’s.

Jason Adam returns to the roster after being sent down. He has struggled a bit this season, carrying a 9.45 ERA in 6.2 innings of work. Kyle Ryan has also struggled in his time on the big league roster, leading to his departure.
