Andrew Shaw is the Chicago Blackhawks’ nominee for the 2021 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which is awarded annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the sport. The award is voted upon by the each team’s chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.

The 29-year-old forward spent nearly 14 months recovering from a concussion he sustained November 30, 2019, against the Colorado Avalanche. He scored 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in 26 games, then did not play the rest of the season and opted out of the Stanley Cup Qualifiers on July 14, 2020.

Shaw ended his playing career because of concussions April 26. He scored four points (two goals, two assists) in 14 regular season games before he sustained a concussion in a 2-1 overtime win against the Dallas Stars on February 9.

A fifth-round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, Shaw scored 247 points (116 goals, 131 assists) in 544 regular season games and 35 points (16 goals, 19 assists) in 72 playoff games for the Blackhawks and Montreal Canadiens. He won the Stanley Cup twice with the Blackhawks in 2013 and 2015. Chicago traded him to Montreal on June 24, 2016 and re-acquired him June 30, 2019.

Pit Martin (1969-70) and Bryan Berard (2003-04) are the only two Blackhawks players to have won the Masterton Trophy.

The 31 nominees will be narrowed to three finalists in a poll by PHWA members, and the winner will be announced at the 2021 NHL Awards.
