Jamieson Rees scored twice, and the Chicago Wolves ended their three-game losing streak with a 6-5 win against the Rockford IceHogs on Monday at Triphahn Center Ice Arena in Hoffman Estates.
Phil Tomasino had a goal and an assist, and Dominik Bokk and Josh Healey each had two assists for the Wolves (19-8-1-2). Beck Warm made 23 saves.
Brandon Pirri scored twice for the IceHogs (11-18-1), who have lost three straight. Tom Aubrun made 25 saves in his first AHL start. He allowed two goals on 19 shots in 31:42 of ice time in relief against Chicago in his AHL debut March 3.
Phil Tomasino skated around IceHogs defenseman Anton Lindholm then scored his team-high 13th goal with a wrist shot for a 1-0 Chicago lead 35 seconds into the game.
Rees made it 2-0 at 1:11 on a rebound.
Rees scored his second when he skated around IceHogs defenseman Cole Moberg and knocked in a rebound on his backhand to make it 3-0 at 10:32.
Brandon Hickey extended it to 4-0 at 15:29 on a rebound from Luke Evangelista’s shot off Aubrun’s right pad.
Mitchell Fossier cut it to 4-1 at 16:40 when he received DJ Busdeker’s backhand pass and scored from the slot.
Pirri intercepted Max Lajoie’s pass across the blue line and scored on a breakaway to bring the IceHogs within 4-2 at 14:57 of the second period.
David Cotton redirected Healey’s shot from the point to make it 5-2 at 16:10.
Pirri cut it to 5-3 at 3:48 of the third period when he scored on the power play with a one-timer from the top of the right circle. His 76 goals in 245 games rank second all-time in IceHogs’ history to Jeremy Morin’s 90 goals in 236 games.
Tommy Novak extended his point streak to seven games with a one-timer from the right circle to make it 6-3 at 5:18. He has four goals and seven assists during his point streak.
Anton Lindholm’s wrist shot redirected off Sean Malone to cut it to 6-4 at 10:34, and Chris Wilkie made it 6-5 at 11:54 with a blast from the top of the right circle.
Matej Chalupa hit the right post on a breakaway with 5:18 remaining for one of Rockford’s best chances to tie it in the closing minutes.
