Notre Dame hockey has named Chicago Blackhawks’ prospect Landon Slaggert their Rookie of the Year for the 2020-21 season. The Hawks’ 2020 third-round pick recorded 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists) in 25 games in his first season with the Irish.
As a freshman, Slaggert was relied on heavily. He was unquestionably the team’s best penalty killer, manned the front of the net on the power play, and created scoring chances for his linemates. He has turned heads already with his knack for scoring goals, but it’s his work ethic and physicality that sets him apart.
World Junior Gold
Slaggert was also a member of the USA World Junior team that won gold at the World Junior Championships in January.
Playing a bottom-six role, Slaggert did not tally a point in the tournament, but served in a shutdown role and saw time on the penalty kill. Winning teams need guys who can excel in this role, and that is exactly what Slaggert did.
Slaggert will most likely return to Notre Dame for his sophomore season.
Considering the ‘youth movement’ the Blackhawks are currently employing, there’s a possibility Slaggert will get his opportunity sometime in the next few years to crack the Blackhawks’ lineup. He will be looking to build off of his strong freshman season as he continues to grow into a complete player.
