With Nico Hoerner likely out for a significant time after Tuesday’s hamstring injury, the Cubs added depth by signing veteran infielder Dee Strange-Gordon to a minor league contract Wednesday.

Gordon, 33, is a lifetime .286 hitter in his ten-year career. He played with the Mariners the last three seasons, posting a .266/.293/.343 slash line.

The Cubs still haven’t announced Hoerner’s move to the injured list as they await the MRI results for his hamstring, but it’s only a matter of time after the amount of pain he was in Tuesday night.

Gordon, a two-time All-Star, provides depth on the infield as the Cubs continue to face the injury bug. Matt Duffy is already on the injured list.

As of now, it seems the Cubs will promote veteran Rafael Ortega. Nothing is official yet.

Ortega last played in the majors in 2019.

With Duffy out, the Cubs don’t have many options, meaning the loss of Hoerner is significant. Gordon at least supplies a veteran presence potentially.
