Chicago Fire striker Robert Berić secured a green card late last week. The move now leaves the Chicago Fire with the maximum of eight players filling up international player slots.
The green card grants Berić permanent resident status in the United States, and because the move occurred before the opening of the secondary transfer window (July 7), Berić can now be considered a domestic player.
Berić was signed as a Designated Player in January of 2020 and has scored 13 goals and contributed two assists in 29 appearances for the Fire.
Head Coach Raphael Wicky alluded to a second player that is in Europe attempting to secure their green card. That player is most likely Luka Stojanović. If the midfielder does indeed secure his green card, it will open up an international player slot.
The Fire’s eight international players under contract for the 2021 season currently are: Ignacio Aliseda, Jhon Espinoza, Gastón Giménez, Stanislav Ivanov, Chinonso Offor, Boris Sekulić, Luka Stojanović, and Carlos Terán.
