The Chicago Steel signed head coach Brock Sheahan to a three-year contract extension through the 2023-24 season Thursday.

The Steel also signed associate head coaches Mike Garman and Matt Deschamps to multi-year contract extensions.

The coaching trio led the Steel to the 2021 Clark Cup championship after the team’s second consecutive Anderson Cup as USHL regular-season champions. The Steel won the 2019-20 Anderson Cup with a 41-7-1 record before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the season.

Sheahan, 37, took over the Steel head coaching job Dec. 1, 2019, after Greg Moore took the Toronto Maple Leafs’ AHL head coach job. Sheahan has guided the Steel to a 79-18-4-2 record in the regular season, the highest win total in the USHL during that span. Prior to being the head coach, the former Notre Dame defenseman was an associated head coach for the Steel’s Clark Cup Final run in 2018-19.

“The last three years have been amazing, and I feel so fortunate to get the opportunity to continue to grow what we have built,” Sheahan said. “We have an amazing foundation here with our ownership, support staff, hockey staff and, most importantly, our players. There is not a better place to be in junior hockey.”

The 33-year-old Garman, who joined the Steel in 2017 as an assistant coach, focuses primarily on coaching the team’s goaltenders. He played goalie for three years at Cornell University before a three-year professional career.

The Steel promoted Deschamps, 41, to his current role from assistant coach during the 2020 offseason. He works with defensemen, and notably helped develop Luke Reid into a 2020 sixth-round draft pick by the Nashville Predators and 2021 projected No. 1 overall pick Owen Power.
