The Chicago Blackhawks will have three members from their 2020 NHL Draft class play for the United States national team at the World Junior Summer Showcase.

Goaltender Drew Commesso, defenseman Wyatt Kaiser, and forward Landon Slaggert were among 44 players named to Team USA’s roster for the event.

Team USA’s roster will be split into two squads and compete against Finland and Sweden. The 11-game tournament is an evaluation for players trying to make their national team for the World Junior Championship. The showcase will be July 24-31 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan.

Slaggert is one of seven players from Team USA’s 2021 World Juniors gold-medal team returning. The Chicago Mission alum scored 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists) in 25 games during his freshman season at Notre Dame.

Commesso would’ve joined Slaggert on the team last year if the Boston University goalie did not test positive for COVID-19. Commesso was 6-3-1 with a .915 save percentage in 11 games. After his freshman season, Commesso joined Team USA’s bronze-medal squad at the men’s World Championship following an injury to Anaheim Ducks’ Anthony Stolarz. Commesso did not play in a game.

Kaiser had 10 assists and blocked 40 shots in 28 games during Minnesota-Duluth’s run to the Frozen Four. He has never played for Team USA at any level.

Illinois Natives

Illinois natives Tucker Tynan of Chicago and Sean Behrens of Barrington also made Team USA’s roster for the showcase.

Tynan was included after not playing an OHL game for the Niagara IceDogs since he was cut in the right leg by a skate in December 2019. He was 11-8-4 with a .910 save percentage in 23 games during the 2019-20 season. The OHL did not play this past season because of COVID-19 regulations.

Ranked No. 24 among North American skaters for the 2021 NHL Draft by NHL Central Scouting, Behrens received an invite after a strong under-18 World Juniors. The Denver commit scored four points (one goal, three assists) in five games. He had 35 points (seven goals, 28 assists) in 46 games for the U.S. National U18 Team and 18 points (four goals, 14 assists) in 23 USHL games for the USNTDP Juniors.
