With the announcement of the MLB Futures Game rosters, the Cubs will have two representatives at Coors Field. Outfielder Brennen Davis and pitcher Manuel Rodriguez will represent the Cubs in the annual contest.
Brennen Davis is currently the No. 2 prospect in the Cubs organization per MLB.com. Davis started his 2021 minor league season a little later than most prospects, but tore it up at High-A South Bend. In eight games, Davis slashed .321/.406/.607 with two home runs, two doubles, and five RBI’s. He was quickly sent to Double-A Tennessee where he is currently playing.
Since joining Double-A Tennessee, Davis is slashing .231/.355/.321 with one home run, four doubles, and four RBI’s in 23 games. What’s most impressive is the 14 walks he’s taken in that same time period. Although the average is low, he is still adjusting to better competition at the Double-A level and has a bright future ahead of him.
The 21-year-old outfielder was drafted in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Cubs. Since then, Davis has shot up the Cubs’ top prospect list and cemented himself as a high ceiling player in the Cubs’ system.
In addition to Davis, Manuel Rodriguez will head to Coors Field in two weeks. Rodriguez is not rated by MLB.com as a Cubs top prospect, but he has had a fantastic 2021 season. At Double-A Tennessee, Rodriguez is 1-1 with a 2.03 ERA, 19 strikeouts, and four saves in 13.1 innings. In addition, Rodriguez has walked 10 batters, which is the only blemish on his sensational stat line.
The 24-year-old right-hander was signed as an international free agent in July 2016. Rodriguez played for Leones de Yucatan in the Mexican League before signing.
The Futures Game will be played at Coors Field on Sunday, July 11.
