The Chicago White Sox have announced a slew of roster moves ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Twins. Among those include some reinforcements and, unfortunately, more IL trips.

Bullpen Reinforcements

Jace Fry returns to the White Sox for the first time in 2021. Fry got a late start in 2021 season due to injury. However, in 13 games with Charlotte, the 27-year-old looks like he’s getting back on track. He sported a 1.93 ERA, 21 strikeouts, and only eight walks while recording four holds in 14 innings of work. Fry sported a 3.66 ERA in 2020 in 19 2/3 innings. As a needed boost the bullpen, Fry looks to be a middle relief fixture.

In addition to Fry’s return, Michael Kopech has been reinstated from the Injured List. Kopech’s presence has been sorely missed. After word that Kopech looked sharp during a simulation game a few days ago, the positive news gave White Sox fans hope after the injury bug has terrorized the roster all season long. Kopech is 2-0 in 2021 with a 1.72 ERA, 45 strikeouts, and only 11 walks in 31.1 innings of work as both a spot starter and long bullpen arm.

More IL Stints

With the additions to the bullpen, Evan Marshall has been placed on the injured list, after leaving Tuesday night’s appearance with right forearm tightness. Marshall has had a decent season for the White Sox, pitching to a 5.60 ERA, 26 strikeouts and only nine walks in 27.1 innings. However, he is 0-for-4 in save opportunities and has yielded five long balls already.

Aaron Bummer was also placed on the IL with a strained hamstring. His IL stint is retroactive to June 28. Despite some inconsistency, Bummer has been solid with a 3.26 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 30.1 innings. However, he’s 1-4 this season, 2-for-7 in save opportunities, and has walked 17 batters.

With the injuries piling up, it is great to see both Fry and Kopech return, but it is tough losing both Bummer and Marshall. Let’s hope these injuries are not significant, as the bullpen has underperformed in recent days.
