After hints of the much anticipated Jake Burger promotion, the White Sox officially called up the former first round pick. In addition, the team announced many others moves, some of which may come as a surprise.
Burger has torn up Triple-A this season, slashing .322/.368/.596 with 10 home runs, 36 RBI’s, 29 runs scored, and 15 doubles. The infielder was due for a promotion, and in wake of the Yoan Moncada injury, the timing made more sense than ever before.
Along with adding Burger to the roster, the White Sox reinstated OF Adam Eaton off the 10-day IL. Eaton spent time on the injured list with a strained right hamstring. The outfielder has not been great this season, but with the plethora of injuries to the White Sox roster, Eaton’s presence may be more welcomed than ever. The 32-year-old is slashing .195/.296/.345 with five home runs and 27 RBI’s in 54 games.
To little surprise, RHP Zack Burdi is being sent back to Triple-A Charlotte. Burdi’s promotion came in wake of the Eaton injury, so the two players effectively swap places yet again. In six games this season, Burdi has a 5.00 ERA in 9.0 innings of work.
Yermin Mercedes Demoted?
Perhaps the most shocking move made on Friday is the demotion of fan favorite C/DH Yermin Mercedes. Mercedes was the hottest player in baseball the first month of the season, but has come crashing back down to Earth since. In the month of June, Mercedes hit a pedestrian .159 at the plate.
The 28-year-old has quickly become a fan favorite in 2021. However, struggles during the months of May and June may force the rookie to once again adjust something in his approach. In 68 games this season, Mercedes is slashing .271/.328/.404 with seven home runs and 37 RBI’s. However, his recent cold streak forced the team’s hand in a time where roster spots are critically important.
The White Sox begin their three-game road set with the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 PM CDT with RHP Lance Lynn expected to battle RHP Casey Mize.
